MS08-030 Not A Big Deal Says Microsoft PDF Print E-mail

Microsoft released a patch for Bluetooth technology this month as part of the company's monthly batch of patches. While on the surface it seems like a significant risk, Microsoft says it's not really a big deal. Writing in its Security Vulnerability Research & Defense blog, the company stated that:

"First, since the issue is triggered over a Bluetooth link, the attacker would have to be within fairly close physical proximity to the target system.

Second, as the security bulletin states, the issue is triggered by a flood of SDP messages.

Finally, the attacker needs to find a way to control the memory layout of the target system, and place data they control in the correct location, all within the timing window mentioned above."

So there you have it: As long as no one is using a high gain Bluetooth antenna in your vicinity and as long as no one is smart enough to figure out how to manipulate things into an amenable state, you're safe.

Vista getting much pickier PDF Print E-mail

Windows Vista is known to be much pickier about the file types it allows the user to use than previous operating systems. Some file types are considered to be a potential threat, and therefore are blocked. As a general rule– this is good, but sometimes it can just drive you nuts. Windows XP Pro also used to block many potentially harmful file types, but here, with Vista, the file range is extended to even more file types. Some of these *might* be harmful, and I'm not saying that they should always be trusted. That's why you're *supposed* to have an updated Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware program running and scanning your computer at all times (Lamer note: You do have one, don't you?). But my point is that if you know what you're doing you could very well disable this protection and trust your AV program to do the scanning for you.

Microsoft kills Vista SP1 update PDF Print E-mail

The Windows Vista SP1 update designed to prepare PCs for the imminent release of the service pack has been pulled by Microsoft, following reports that it endlessly rebooted Vista PCs.

Although the update - actually a pair of prerequisite files that modify Vista's install components - has been temporarily pulled from Windows Update, Microsoft has not yet produced a fix for users whose machines either won't boot or reboot constantly.

"Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes," said Nick White, a Vista programme manager, in a post to the company's blog.
